CAMERA’s campus team just returned from leading media workshops at Indiana University. This is our second year in a row of working with select Hillels in sending students on Birthright, and we’re very excited that, this past summer, Indiana University Hillel was added to the partnership. Read Aarika Washington’s great piece “Hillel and CAMERA send media students to Israel” for more information about this program.
Unique aspects of this partnership include having Israeli soldiers stay for the full 10 days of the Birthright trip as opposed to the usual five, having a media component while in Israel with CAMERA staff, and a follow up educational event about the media and its impact on the campus atmosphere at Indiana University. In addition to meeting with the Birthright participants at the university, CAMERA staff met with pro-Israel students at the Hillel and led a writing workshop on how to identify misconceptions in the media.
CAMERA’s writing workshops cover bias in print and online media. The workshops also cover the media’s influence on public policy, in addition to successful letter-writing to editors, along with campus advocacy for Israel.
