CAMERA on Campus: Starting the Year Strong

Hello friends, September was a busy month for CAMERA as we had back-to-school and welcome events at campuses around the world, including our Israel-Is VR tour in the US and productive meetings with the UJS and StandWithUs in the UK.

As the 2nd anniversary of October 7th approaches, we also want to announce the relaunch of our annual #FacetheTruth campaign, ensuring that the horrors and tragedies of October 7th and the war we are still fighting are never forgotten.

Israel-Is VR Tour

CAMERA on Campus teamed up with Israel-Is and students across the US for our Survived to Tell tour. From Oral Roberts University to Florida State, Survived to Tell is giving students the opportunity to live parts of the tragedy of October 7th through VR, giving them a new understanding of the atrocities Hamas is capable of.

Welcome Events with CAMERA on Campus

CAMERA fellows and coalition groups had a strong September with welcome events across the country, reintroducing CAMERA on Campus to the campus community as an invaluable resource in the fight against antisemitism.

CAMERA on Campus Meets With UJS and SWU

Our UK campus advisors Jack Juby and Sena Cantay met with the Union of Jewish Students and Stand With Us UK to discuss how CAMERA can partake in a coalition of Zionist organizations in the UK joining together to support students and each other against the rising tide of antisemitism and anti-Israel bias.

CAMERA Statement on the Murder of Charlie Kirk

We deplore the murder of Charlie Kirk, a Christian Zionist whose life was cut short at the age of 31. We offer our sympathy to his family and to all those grieving this terrible loss. This crime comes at a time of rising violence directed at Jews and those who stand with them. In Boulder, Colorado, a solidarity walk for Israeli hostages was attacked with firebombs, leaving an elderly participant dead. In Washington, DC, two Israeli Embassy staffers were shot outside a Jewish museum. These incidents, and now the murder of Mr. Kirk, reflect a disturbing trend: hostility and hatred that begin with words are increasingly spilling over into physical attacks. Against that trend, Charlie Kirk chose to meet disagreement with words. On campuses and in public forums, he welcomed argument and dialogue, often engaging with those who opposed him most strongly. In this, he exemplified the democratic ideal that disputes must be tested through debate rather than settled through intimidation or violence. Democratic life depends on the ability to argue, to disagree, and to contend with one another without fear of being harmed. When violence is used to settle disputes, everyone loses: not only the victims and their families, but the society that permits intimidation to replace dialogue. For more than four decades, CAMERA has worked to ensure that media reporting is accurate and fair. We do this because when falsehoods and distortions go unchallenged, they create an environment in which prejudice and aggression can flourish. Truth is not an abstraction; it is a safeguard against the culture of contempt that so often precedes violence.

The murder of Charlie Kirk is a tragedy and a warning. At CAMERA, we will continue to defend the principles of truthful reporting, civilized debate, and democratic life itself.

Israel’s Academic Community Under Siege

While foreign activist groups drive much of the global push to isolate Israeli universities, some of the movement’s legitimacy is supplied from within. A segment of Israeli academics actively supports or collaborates with boycott campaigns either out of genuine conviction that Israel is committing war crimes, or from a calculated belief that distancing the academy from the government will shield it from international sanctions. Both approaches risk backfiring by handing boycott advocates the very moral and political ammunition they need to target Israel’s academic community.

“Face the Truth” is a CAMERA on Campus campaign that aims to show the world how October 7th is being sanitized, rewritten and denied to create a campus and media environment that favors Hamas and feeds the global rise in antisemitism and anti-Israel bias. Graphics like these will be given to our students to help combat the disinformation being spread on campus every day.

US Campus Advisor CAMERA seeks a full-time Campus Advisor to join its growing team of young professionals providing support and guidance to students interested in activism supporting Israel or countering anti-Jewish and anti-Israel voices and forces on campus. CAMERA on Campus is the university and college-focused department at the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis. Founded in 1982, it is a non-partisan non-profit that strives to correct misinformation in mainstream media. The Campus Advisor will oversee CAMERA Fellows on campuses in the United States. This includes helping them to organize educational events on campus and to write op-eds for various news outlets. Furthermore, they will help develop and implement effective measures to expand CAMERA’s campus presence. The position will be based in our Boston office. Requirements for the position include:

1-3 years of relevant campus experience.
Excellent writing/editing skills.
Strong event planning skills.
Strong skills in communications, interpersonal relations, and organization which will be used to mentor students on dozens of university campuses.
Strong knowledge of history and politics as it relates to the Middle East, Israel, and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Fluency in English.
