Participants in IfNotNow\u2019s training may be targeting Ramah camps, Young Judea camps, the Union of Reform Judaism\u00a0camps, and Hashomer Hatzair, Habonim Dror, and Bnei Akiva camps.<\/h2>\n

As your children or grandchildren head off to summer camp, do you know what they will be learning there about Israel?<\/p>\n

The anti-Israel group IfNotNow is planning to attempt\u00a0to infiltrate Jewish summer camps to teach campers \u201cabout the occupation.\u201d The group has held two training sessions, one in person and one online,\u00a0for counselors, in which they suggest, among other things, that camp counselors \u201cpractice with them [i.e.,12 to 15 year old campers] saying the Kaddish every morning for Palestinians who have been killed in Gaza or its environs.\u201d Of course, many of those killed in Gaza were Hamas members who, prior to their demise, were bent on destroying Israel. Other strategies for other age groups \u2013 as young as six \u2013 were discussed.<\/p>\n

Although the Ramah camps have made it clear that IfNotNow\u2019s anti-Israel agenda is not welcome, the group still plans to attempt to surreptitiously indoctrinate Ramah campers without the consent of the camp administrations. Moreover, participants in IfNotNow\u2019s training may also be targeting Young Judea camps, the Union of Reform Judaism\u00a0camps, and Hashomer Hatzair, Habonim Dror, and Bnei Akiva camps.<\/p>\n

IfNotNow does not talk about peace, or about ending the violence directed towards Israel by Palestinians and their Arab allies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

IfNotNow is a relatively new anti-Israel organization, marketed towards Jewish young adults. The group is reported to have about\u00a01700 members<\/a>, and it has 14 chapters or\u00a0\u201chives\u201d<\/a>\u00a0around the country. The group\u2019s\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0states, \u201cthe time has come\u00a0to end our community\u2019s support for the occupation.\u00a0We will be the generation to do it. The occupation is a daily nightmare for those who live under it and a moral disaster for those who support and administer it.\u00a0IfNotNow is working to transform the American Jewish community\u2019s support for occupation into a call for freedom and dignity for all.\u201d<\/p>\n

IfNotNow does not talk about peace, or about ending the violence directed towards Israel by Palestinians and their Arab allies. Israel has in the past pursued\u00a0repeated<\/a>\u00a0efforts to end its presence in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), including in 2000 and 2001 at Camp David and Taba under Prime Minister Ehud Barak, as well as in 2008 under Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Former Palestinian Authority President Arafat responded with a\u00a0terror war and Palestinian Authority President\u00a0Abbas responded with\u00a0rejection.<\/p>\n

Abbas\u00a0continues<\/a>\u00a0to refuse to recognize a Jewish state. Israel\u2019s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza was followed by the rise of Hamas and its seizure of the territory. Yet, IfNotNow ignores these facts, and\u00a0ignores the attacks and wars that lead to Israeli administration over the West Bank to begin with.\u00a0They speak only of ending Israel\u2019s \u201coccupation\u201d in a vacuum. (A recent\u00a0Facebook<\/a>\u00a0post declared naively, \u201cif Israel is embarrassed by the Occupation, it can always simply end the Occupation.\u201d)<\/p>\n

The group has garnered attention by staging a protest inside the AIPAC policy conference in\u00a02017<\/a>\u00a0as well as with a one-sided\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Teen Vogue<\/em><\/a>. In\u00a0April<\/a>\u00a0of this year, when the riots at the Israel\/Gaza border began, the group organized a Kaddish for those that were killed, despite the fact that most of them were members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. (For more information on the group\u2019s anti-Israel activity, see Professor Miriam Elman\u2019s\u00a0detailed post<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0Legal Insurrection\u00a0<\/em>blog.)<\/p>\n

As is the case with much of the media bias that CAMERA discusses, IfNotNow\u2019s activism suffers from a complete lack of context. IfNotNow\u2019s claims that, for example, \u201cboth peoples\u00a0are caught in a cycle of violence,\u201d\u00a0or that it is solely within Israel\u2019s power to \u201cend the occupation,\u201d\u00a0are based on a misreading of history. Its\u00a0demonstrations, in which members shout, \u201cIf am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I?\u201d\u00a0or recite Kaddish, are largely fact-free.<\/p>\n

IfNotNow\u2019s ahistorical approach can be seen in\u00a0this flyer<\/a>\u00a0that members of the group handed out earlier this week to Taglit Birthright participants at New York\u2019s JFK airport:<\/p>\n

Some important questions that were omitted: How did \u201cthe occupation\u201d\u00a0start?\u00a0What has Israel done to try to resolve it? Why does it continue? Those are the questions IfNotNow doesn\u2019t seem to be interested in.<\/p>\n

The group also\u00a0makes clear\u00a0that, \u201cwe do not take a unified stance on BDS, Zionism or the question of statehood.\u201d In other words, they don\u2019t even pretend to be Zionist, or to support the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state, and they don\u2019t oppose BDS (the movement to boycott, divest from, and sanction Israel).<\/p>\n

As is exemplified in the group\u2019s name, IfNotNow relies on Jewish traditions and symbols, but twists them to oppose Israel\u2019s right to self-defense.\u00a0The group\u00a0claims\u00a0its name is \u201cinspired by Hillel\u2019s three questions\u201d and its logo is \u201cinspired by the burning bush.\u201d Yet, the group\u2019s actions undermine the Jewish state\u2019s right to defend itself from attack, and it even sympathizes with terrorists who are sworn to destroy Israel.<\/p>\n

On May 27, over Memorial Day weekend, the group held a \u201ctraining\u201d for counselors at Jewish summer camps. The participants included counselors from Reform, Conservative, and liberal Zionist camps. While only about a\u00a0dozen\u00a0counselors participated in the in-person training, approximately another 50-60 reportedly joined a follow-up\u00a0webinar<\/a>. If they meet with any success this year, we can expect that number to grow next year.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Jewish Press<\/em>\u00a0from someone who participated in part of the online workshop stated that it included \u201cyoung people from the summer camps of the Reform movement, Hashomer Hatzair, Habonim Dror, Young Judea, and even a graduate of Bnei Akiva in the UK\u2026They all explained why they wanted to instill in their campers an awareness of the \u2018occupation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

This article also stated that one suggestion made during the training was to \u201cpractice with them [i.e., 12 to 15 year old campers] saying the Kaddish every morning for Palestinians who have been killed in Gaza or its environs.\u201d As noted above, this is essentially saying Kaddish for terrorists who died while trying to kill or harm Israelis. While some Palestinians who have died in the fighting are innocent, there does not appear to be any attempt made to distinguish the innocent from the terrorists.<\/p>\n

Ramah Camps have\u00a0made clear<\/a>\u00a0that they won\u2019t incorporate IfNotNow\u2019s program into their curriculum. It\u2019s unclear, however, whether an individual counselor will be able to undermine Ramah\u2019s approved curriculum. IfNotNow has\u00a0reportedly<\/a>\u00a0indicated that its intention is to do so.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In addition, IfNotNow has also said that it intends to target other camps outside the Ramah system, such as Young Judea\u00a0and\u00a0Union for Reform Judaism camps.<\/p>\n

This is an insidious attempt to indoctrinate Jewish youth, at a time when they are away from home, and in many cases can\u2019t even reach their parents by phone. Will responsible camp staff take the necessary steps to prevent this? That remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
