Its\u00a0February 27\u00a0piece entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=3689a043a2&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: What You Need to Know<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0suggests that\u00a0shift\u00a0also entails\u00a0publishing\u00a0factually shoddy\u00a0commentary.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the ambitious title and long length, the one-sided account omits many things that teens trying to learn about current events ought to know and instead reads like a fact sheet from the Palestinian side of the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Author Emma Sarran Webster has no apparent knowledge or background on the complex issues involved, billing herself as an expert on health and beauty\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=50705bfaf2&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">with a<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;deep love for social media and cat videos.&#8221;\u00a0She relies heavily in the article on a single &#8220;expert,&#8221;\u00a0University of Wisconsin professor Nadav Shelef. Shelef&#8217;s writing, which has been praised by far-left professors, focuses heavily on settlements, and as a result, Webster&#8217;s article also focuses overwhelmingly on &#8220;controversial&#8221;\u00a0settlements as the central issue. This, while completely\u00a0ignoring\u00a0Palestinian incitement and incentivizing of violence, as well as Palestinian intransigence. In fact, Webster includes an entire four-paragraph section subtitled, &#8220;What are settlements, and why are they so controversial?&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9112\" style=\"width: 2199px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9112\" src=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Teen-Vogue.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2199\" height=\"3000\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teen Vogue writers tend to deal with less sensitive topics than the Israeli Palestinian conflict, so should be careful before reporting on this topic inaccurately.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yet, there is no section\u00a0on Palestinian cash payments to convicted terrorists or to the families of terrorists who were killed, and there is no section that discusses the glorification of violence in the Palestinian government and society.<\/p>\n<p>The article also omits discussion of historical Jewish ties to Israel\u00a0and, unconscionably, the\u00a0repeated Palestinian rejection of extensive Israeli peace offers. Where was the section on\u00a0Arafat and\u00a0Abbas walking away from the creation of a Palestinian state?<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the article contains several misrepresentations: it references &#8220;Palestinians&#8221; who lived a century ago, and says that\u00a0in 1948 Arab nations &#8220;began fighting on behalf of Palestine.&#8221;\u00a0It misrepresents UN Resolution 242 and the Fourth Geneva Convention, and fails to put UN statements in the context of that body\u2019s well-documented bias.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><em>Teen Vogue<\/em> editors may, in good faith, be trying to inform their young readers about serious issues, but they must do so responsibly by presenting a complete and accurate explanation. Instead, this article,\u00a0relying almost exclusively\u00a0on the commentary of\u00a0one partisan academic,\u00a0is an unserious look at a complicated issue.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Author\u00a0Emma Sarran Webster begins her article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Earlier this month, Donald Trump welcomed Israel\u2019s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to the White House. During the leaders\u2019\u00a0joint press conference, the topic of\u00a0controversial\u00a0Israeli settlements and the country\u2019s ongoing conflict with the Palestinians was broached, with Trump\u00a0turning to\u00a0Netanyahu and saying, \u201cI&#8217;d like to see you hold back on settlements.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As noted above, this introduction sets the tone of the entire article, which devotes a full four-paragraph section to the issue of the settlements and why they are \u201cso controversial.\u201d In contrast, the author devotes exactly zero paragraphs to the Palestinian \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage1.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=ea9159ef0c&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">pay-to-slay<\/a>\u201d scheme, to glorification of violence in music<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=d258955619&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">videos<\/a>,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage2.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=8402ecdfda&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">cartoons<\/a>, schoolbooks and children\u2019s shows and even in statements by<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=b7cc6cfcd0&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas<\/a>, and to the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=234374b06f&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">Palestinian rejection<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of multiple recent two-state offers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8376\" style=\"width: 493px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8376\" src=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Palestinian-incitement.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"479\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glorification of murderers on Fatah`s Facebook page.Somehow, the usually\u00a0tech savvy Teen Vogue managed to miss this particular social media outlet in its reporting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Distorting History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, though, Webster (whose bio includes the fact that the beauty product she\u2019s loving right now is YSL\u2019s Glossy Lip Stain and whose other articles for Teen Vogue include, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=6394caa95d&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">Spring Break Decor Collection Includes a MERMAID Blanket<\/a>\u201d) attempts to provide some background. She tells us:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Israel and the Palestinians have technically been\u00a0fighting\u00a0for control of the same territories for nearly a century,\u00a0according to NPR, but the heart of the conflict dates back to the 1940s. Jews, fleeing persecution in Europe, had long been fighting to establish an official Jewish state in the biblical land of Israel, which was a majority-Arab territory\u00a0referred to as Palestine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Webster omits that there has been a continuous Jewish presence in Jerusalem for 3000 years, and that as far back as 1820,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage1.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=5459abdb39&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">Jews were the largest ethnic group<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in Jerusalem. In contrast, the concept of a distinct Palestinian Arab identity originated only in the mid-<a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage1.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=12fcdbf76e&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">twentieth century<\/a>.\u00a0Until 1948, in fact, it was<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=11a062f8c1&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">Jews<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>living under the British Mandate that were referred to as \u201cPalestinians.\u201d Arabs in the region considered themselves &#8220;south-Syrians,&#8221; or part of the larger Arab nation.<\/p>\n<p>Webster does correctly note that it was Arabs that rejected the 1948 partition plan. She claims, however, that in 1948 Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq (she omits Lebanon) \u201cinvaded Israel and began fighting on behalf of Palestine.\u201d Aside from the fact that there was no Palestine, if those other Arab countries had truly been fighting on behalf of the local Arab population, it is unclear why Egypt and Jordan would seize territories for themselves. And, while she correctly notes that Jordan took control of eastern Jerusalem as a result of the 1948 War, she fails to note that when it did so, it<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=46e7b08de0&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">expelled all of the Jews<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>then living there. She also incorrectly claims that there was a peace agreement in 1949 \u2013 in fact, an<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=33d98b941c&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">armistice<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>agreement was signed, but not a peace agreement. The Arab states expressly rejected peace with Israel multiple times.<\/p>\n<p>The article goes on, \u201cit was officially referred to as \u2018mandatory Palestine\u2019 because of the British Mandate for Palestine.\u201d It does not seem to occur to the writer to ask, where does the term \u201cPalestine\u201d come from? After defeating a Jewish rebellion, it was the ancient Romans that gave Judea the name Palestine,\u00a0\u201cin an attempt to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=9406811c62&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">minimize<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Jewish identification with the land of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exclusive Focus on Settlements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, Webster returns to the \u201ccontroversial settlements.\u201d She mischaracterizes UN Resolution 242, claiming that it \u201cemphasized the \u2018inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war,\u2019\u201d and implying that the Resolution contemplates that Israel will eventually give up all of the West Bank. In fact, the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage1.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=2e8e641879&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">drafters<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of the Resolution have<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage1.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=1ff75f53c7&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">explicitly<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>stated that it presumed that Israel will give up only part of the West Bank, because it acquired the territory in a defensive war and not through an act of aggression.\u00a0Moreover, the armistice lines did not represent final borders. Indeed, the drafters of 242 saw those lines as indefensible and likely to invite further aggression.<\/p>\n<p>The author similarly mischaracterizes the Fourth Geneva Convention when she writes that, \u201cper\u00a0international law as outlined by the Fourth Geneva Convention, it is illegal for an occupying power to move its civilian population into the territory it occupies.\u201d Because the West Bank was not the legally held territory of any party to the Convention at the time that Israel captured it, however, this provision is not applicable to the West Bank. Moreover, even if it were, many legal scholars note that it prevents only forcible transfers, and not the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=5eac08d26a&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">voluntary<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>movement of Jewish settlers into Judea and Samaria.<\/p>\n<p>Next, Webster tells readers that \u201cthe other issue is that the Israeli settlements and construction\u00a0make it difficult\u00a0for Palestinians to move freely within the West Bank and essentially\u00a0dilute\u00a0what could potentially be a sovereign Palestinian state.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9113\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9113\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9113\" src=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Jews-Hebron-1921.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"767\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jews in Hebron in the 1920s. Jews lived in Hebron for thousands of years until they were massacred and driven out in 1929 &#8211; yet Teen Vogue says that Jews in the West Bank will &#8220;dilute&#8221; a Palestinian state.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By claiming that Jewish homes in the West Bank \u201cdilute\u201d a Palestinian state, Webster is credulously accepting the\u00a0premise that Jews should not be allowed to live in that state. This is despite the fact that two million Arab citizens live in Israel with full equality under the law.<\/p>\n<p>In discussing the passage of UN Resolution 2334 in December, she fails to note the significant opposition to it, including a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage2.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=f3b38225a1&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">bipartisan and overwhelming condemnation<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of the measure from the US Congress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ignoring Palestinian Intransigence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, Webster asks \u201cWhat are the \u201cone state\u201d and \u201ctwo state\u201d solutions we keep hearing about?\u201d Regarding the two-state solution, Webster again cites the same &#8220;expert,&#8221; who says, \u201cthe two-state solution has been on the table for\u00a080 years\u00a0\u2018in one form or another,\u2019 and conversation today largely revolves around how the territories should be divided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What Webster doesn&#8217;t tell her readers is that it was<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=ce04fe18f7&amp;e=7729a816e7\" target=\"_blank\">Palestinian leaders who rejected the two-state solution<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in 2000, in 2001, and in 2008.
