{"id":5707,"date":"2013-10-31T20:04:46","date_gmt":"2013-10-31T20:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/blog\/?p=1264"},"modified":"2020-02-11T20:45:54","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T20:45:54","slug":"camera-presents-dr-anat-berko-at-tulane-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/he\/blog\/camera-presents-dr-anat-berko-at-tulane-university\/","title":{"rendered":"CAMERA Presents Dr. Anat Berko at Tulane University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Anat Berko came to speak at <a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/campuses\/tulane.html#.UnPEUHC-rn4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tulane University<\/a> on October 19th, 2013, a part of her speaking tour across several campuses. <a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/campuses\/fellowbio.html#Kravis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Kravis<\/a>, CAMERA <a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/campus-programs\/camera-fellowship\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fellow<\/a> at Tulane University, explains that the event was targeted towards &#8220;Jewish studies students,\u00a0psychology students, sociology students, homeland security students, [and] students\u00a0that are already involved in Israel advocacy.&#8221; Thirty-seven students attended the event.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Berko discussed\u00a0terrorism in the Middle East, through sociological psychological lenses. She focused in particular on the role of women and children in suicide bombing. The event offered an excellent platform for an academic discussion on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Although those interested in homeland security, Jewish studies, and Israel were well represented in the audience, Kravis says that more effective advertising strategies should be used next time to attract more psychology and sociology majors to events such as this one. He also adds that, in retrospect, it would have been a good idea to also attract students from the Gender Studies Department to the event.<\/p>\n<p>Kravis was pleased that &#8220;t<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">he homeland security students thought the event was particularly\u00a0<\/span>interesting and actually asked Dr. Berko to train them later on&#8230;<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">because the homeland security students will apply for jobs related\u00a0<\/span>to stopping terrorism after graduating, I think they took the event to be more\u00a0personally relevant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A student in the audience raised an interesting point during the Q &amp; A: the fact that it is ironic that\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Islamic terrorists who become suicide\u00a0<\/span>bombers are in essence escaping a restrictive society via martyrdom so as so enter a less\u00a0restrictive afterlife which resembles the western lifestyle\u2014the very lifestyle they proclaim to be against in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Other excellent questions were raised by students, including questions regarding the implementation of counter-terrorism policy.
