This past February, Emanuele Ottolenghi<\/a>, Senior Fellow of Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD)<\/a>, spoke at an event held by\u00a0Denison University<\/a>‘s CAMERA – supported group DU it for Israel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0event\u2019s concentration\u00a0on Iran\u2019s involvement in the Syrian conflict\u00a0gave students important perspective on the magnitude of events occurring beyond Israel’s borders.<\/p>\n

The Palestinian’s lack of independence, according to Ottolenghi<\/a>, is a marginal issue compared to other events in the region.<\/p>\n

It is important for students to understand Israel\u2019s influence in the Middle East\u2014where it begins as well as where it ends\u2014and to understand the powers of growing Middle Eastern forces such as Iran.<\/p>\n

As a member\u00a0of the FDD, a counterterrorism institute focusing on foreign policy and national security, Ottolenghi gave an expert overview to the students about the Iranian policy in the context of the broader Middle East. At the event, Ottolenghi explained Iran\u2019s role in the Syrian conflict. Following his lecture, students engaged in an question-answer session and were able to fully conceptualize the conflict along with all of its complexities.<\/p>\n

According to FDD research<\/a>, Syrian President Bashar Assad\u2019s forces combined with Iranian supporters<\/a> continue to demolish rebel-held areas in order to prevent rebel power and influence over a lasting political agreement.<\/p>\n

The Islamic Republic of Iran aims to keep Assad in power, however, simultaneously plans how to use Syrian territory should Assad fall. In essence, according to an Institute for the Study of War<\/a> report, Iran\u2019s presence in Syria is inspired entirely by self-interest, which raises a\u00a0red flag\u2014Iran\u2019s tactics to eventually use Syrian territory could immensely increase Iran\u2019s power and threat to the region.<\/p>\n

Last July, Obama managed an agreement with the Iranian government in order to keep the security situation stable. Considered a\u00a0\u201chistoric deal\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by some, Iran promised to never seek, acquire, or develop nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

However, the story with Iran unfortunately did not end with this \u201chistoric agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s involvement has not even changed<\/a>. Just this week, Reuters<\/a> reported that Iran is still working to support the Assad regime as well as Shi\u2019ite militia Groups. Iran\u2019s interest for power over the region remains undisturbed.<\/p>\n

In addition to Iran\u2019s pursuit of tactical territory, Iran has not stopped its nuclear developments<\/a>. This past February<\/a>, despite a UN ban, Iran launched test missiles and completed its new Simorgh rocket. Soon after, in March<\/a>, Iran went on to test two variations of their medium-range ballistic missile, Qadr. Any\u00a0launch of Iran\u2019s nuclear weapons\u00a0could be catastrophic.<\/p>\n

The FDD continues to research the Syrian conflict and expose Iran\u2019s involvement.\u00a0With over 400,000 dead and 4.9 million Syrian refugees, the Syrian conflict and Iran\u2019s nuclear development is an exponentially great threat and concern in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Millions of\u00a0Syrian victims<\/a>\u00a0are suffering as the war continues.\u00a0Without an end to the conflict in Syria in sight,\u00a0there is a looming threat\u00a0that\u00a0Iran will expand its nuclear weapons into new territory,\u00a0threatening international security<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
