While insisting it doesn\u2019t need governmental intervention to fulfill its responsibilities and commitments as a federally-funded academic institution, the university has also demonstrated little interest in actually fulfilling said responsibilities without governmental intervention.<\/p>\n<p>On May 12, Harvard University President Alan Garber penned a letter to Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. In his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/research-funding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/05\/Letter-from-Harvard-President-Alan-M.-Garber-to-the-Honorable-Linda-E.-McMahon.pdf\">letter<\/a>, Garber claimed to share with McMahon a belief in \u201cthe importance of ending antisemitism and\u2026foster[ing] an academic environment that encourages freedom of thought and expression\u2026\u201d But, Garber argued, \u201cHarvard\u2019s efforts to achieve these goals are undermined and threatened by the federal government\u2019s overreach\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks earlier, Rabbi David Wolpe \u2013 who served on Harvard\u2019s Antisemitism Advisory Group in 2023 \u2013 was quoted in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/harvard-antisemitism-task-force-trump?taid=68065daada87f4000140b623&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=organic-social&amp;utm_source=twitter\">Free Press<\/a>\u00a0offering an insider perspective on Garber and Harvard\u2019s efforts on antisemitism:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I asked Wolpe about Harvard\u2019s current antisemitism task force, he told me that while Garber \u201ctakes antisemitism seriously, people underestimate the amount of institutional resistance at many, many levels that a president of Harvard finds when it comes to dealing with antisemitism.\u201d Wolpe added that \u201cmany people at Harvard are themselves either mildly or seriously antisemitic,\u201d and others \u201cdon\u2019t believe that antisemitism is a problem, and Jews are just the paragon of white privilege.\u201d Between those two constituencies, said Wolpe, \u201cI don\u2019t know how much more Garber could or couldn\u2019t do,\u201d and that \u201cit\u2019s an extraordinarily thorny path to navigate to change that ethos.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wolpe\u2019s description of the environment evidences that Garber does, in fact, need external help.<\/p>\n<p>Wolpe\u2019s sentiment is also supported by the findings of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edworkforce.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/10.30.24_committee_on_education_and_the_workforce_republican_staff_report_-_antisemitism_on_college_campuses_exposed.pdf\">Congressional investigation<\/a>\u00a0into antisemitism at universities. At Harvard, it found institutional resistance among both administrators and faculty toward addressing antisemitism and anti-Israel extremism. Among the report\u2019s findings, it was revealed that \u201cHarvard\u2019s faculty intervened to prevent meaningful discipline toward antisemitic conduct violations on numerous occasions.\u201d It was also revealed that Garber himself intervened to stop a corporation senior fellow from describing as antisemitic an eliminationist slogan that called for the destruction of the Jewish state.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Garber\u2019s protestations, a toxic, fundamentally anti-academic, and antisemitic culture remains unimpeded within Harvard.<\/p>\n<p>Consider just some of the recent headlines out of Harvard. Instead of facing condemnation, a student who faces criminal charges for assaulting a Jewish student during a protest was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeditors.com\/p\/harvard-law-review-gives-65000-fellowship-to-bharmal\">rewarded<\/a>\u00a0by the Harvard Law Review with a $65,000 fellowship. An undergraduate organization hosted an antisemitic, extremist speaker who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amchainitiative.org\/search-by-university#university\/name2\/campus-monitor2\/5b4bd8b12d7f5f28788b1671\/view-incident-details5\/67ddd167554db902cf02eccc?ref=view_211_page%253D2\">told<\/a>\u00a0the student newspaper that \u201cif Zionists,\u201d i.e. the vast majority of Jews, \u201cdo not want to be compared to Nazis, they should stop acting like Nazis.\u201d The university\u2019s Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine organization released a statement that made the astonishingly brainless claim that Israel has been committing genocide for \u201cover 76 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no indication of any serious plan to counteract this bigoted and unintellectual culture. Instead, it seems Harvard is only acting to create an\u00a0<em>illusion<\/em>\u00a0of concern.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard\u2019s establishment of a \u201ctask force\u201d on antisemitism after October 7 is perhaps the clearest illustration of this. The university appointed Derek Penslar, who had long been downplaying and whitewashing antisemitism at Harvard, as co-chair. The other co-chair ended up resigning shortly after her appointment, and sources close to her indicated she believed the university wasn\u2019t taking the issue seriously. Wolpe himself also resigned from a university \u201cAntisemitism Advisory Group\u201d when he realized he could not make a difference given the university\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, it\u2019s not that Harvard is incapable of decisiveness. Rather, it seems to find urgency only when federal funding is on the line. As the new U.S. administration took power and began threatening such funding, Harvard acted quickly \u2013 by shoveling money into its Washington D.C.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/government\/politics-elections\/2025\/05\/13\/colleges-spend-heavily-lobbying\">lobbying budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, Harvard isn\u2019t the only university that requires governmental prompting to start taking antisemitism seriously. For years, CAMERA has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CAMERA-Report-Brown-Universitys-Choices-Curriculum-Platform-for-Anti-Zionist-Narrative.pdf\">raising the alarm<\/a>\u00a0about the university\u2019s Choices Program, which was feeding deeply flawed and at times antisemitic curriculum to K-12 students. The university refused to take any action until the threat of losing federal funding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-educations-office-civil-rights-sends-letters-60-universities-under-investigation-antisemitic-discrimination-and-harassment\">became real<\/a>. Shortly after, the university\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/about\/administration\/provost\/communications\/update-choices-program\">suddenly discovered<\/a>\u00a0that Choices was \u201cno longer economically viable\u201d and thus it decided to \u201cdiscontinue hosting\u201d the program.<\/p>\n<p>Brown, like Harvard, has also shown it can act decisively when it wants. While the university has still failed to address the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/camera-report-ivy-league-propaganda-how-brown-university-radicalized-students-after-october-7\/\">rampant antisemitism and extremism<\/a>\u00a0pervading its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/camera-report-anti-israel-extremism-and-corrupt-scholarship-at-brown-university\/\">Center for Middle East Studies<\/a>, it moved quickly to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/retaliation-brown-charges-student-newspaper-with-trademark-violations-after-reporter-created-website-exposing-dei-administrators\/\">punish<\/a>\u00a0a student who criticized the proliferation of administrative jobs at the university.<\/p>\n<p>One can legitimately question the wisdom and even the motivations of government officials exerting financial pressure on universities over their handling of antisemitism. But the toxic culture that has burgeoned at Harvard, and the university\u2019s failure to take meaningful steps to reverse it, discredit Garber\u2019s self-serving declarations that he can address the problem without external intervention.
