For many secular Jewish Israelis, speaking Hebrew (\u201cIvrit\u201d) and serving in the military are some of the most important cultural aspects of their Jewish identities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.org\/news\/ajc-surveys-of-us-israeli-jews-reveal-inadequate-education-on-israel-diaspora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">few Diaspora Jews<\/a> attain proficiency, and many are not exposed to the language beyond learning how to read the prayers to complete their bar or bat mitzvah service. Even then, comprehension of the meaning of these texts is often absent or not fully understood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet many Diaspora Jews want to strengthen their relationship with Israel. Some serve as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lonesoldiercenter.com\/about-us\/who-are-lone-soldiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lone soldiers<\/a>\u00a0in the Israel Defense Forces or eventually make\u00a0<em>aliyah<\/em>. The good news is that anyone can acquire language skills; it is a transportable asset that has the potential to facilitate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishstudies.washington.edu\/global-judaism\/sarah-benor-hebrew-infusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meaningful relationships<\/a>\u00a0between Diaspora Jews and Israelis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story of the language\u2014from antiquity to the 21st century\u2014is laden with Jewish history. Modern Hebrew, with its influence from biblical, rabbinic and medieval Hebrew, can provide the linguistic foundation needed to read the literature and historical documents that have been at the core of Jewish culture for millennia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Jewish self-determination in 1948, the revival of Hebrew overcame all odds.\u00a0Some near-sighted voices advocated for other languages, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/israeled.org\/hebrew-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">German<\/a>, to serve as the\u00a0<em>lingua franca<\/em>\u00a0of the future Jewish state. Ben-Yehuda\u2019s vision of a Hebrew-speaking Jewish state was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishunpacked.com\/the-history-revival-of-the-hebrew-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismissed as unrealistic<\/a>\u00a0by Theodor Herzl, the father of political Zionism. But thanks to Ben-Yehuda\u2019s passion, rooted in the\u00a0Herzlian logic\u00a0of \u201cIf you will it, it is no dream,\u201d the Hebrew language ultimately triumphed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps most importantly, the challenges Ben-Yehuda faced when he revived the Hebrew language parallel the current challenges facing the global pro-Israel community. He had to weather\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/etzion.org.il\/en\/halakha\/1858-eliezer-ben-yehuda-revival-hebrew-language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backlash<\/a>\u00a0from Jews opposed to reintroducing the\u00a0<em>lashon hakodesh<\/em>\u2014the \u201choly tongue\u201d\u2014into everyday life. The linguist was even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/en\/ben-yehuda-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jailed<\/a>\u00a0by the Ottoman authorities for his efforts toward Jewish self-determination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advancing the number of global Hebrew learners is a long-term investment. The Israeli Foreign Ministry should take concrete steps toward this endeavor. The latest innovations in Hebrew-language curricula should be exchanged between Hebrew educators in the Diaspora and instructors teaching in Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opportunities for young-adult and adolescent Hebrew education in the Diaspora should be more financially and practically accessible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Hebrew curricula should highlight the Jewish indigenous connection with Israel through language and culture.
