A<\/span> descr<\/span>i<\/span>ption<\/span><\/a> of a course beginning this week at <\/span>Oberlin College, my alma mater<\/span>, <\/span>reads: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Popular conceptions of the relationship between Jews and power tend either to adopt (in the case of sympathetic accounts) a view of Jews as perennial victims or (in the case of hostile\/antisemitic accounts) a view of Jews as overly or preternaturally powerful. This course attempts to complicate that bipolar framework by exploring a more diverse range of encounters between Jews and power from antiquity to the present.<\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing wrong, of course, with a take-down of the view of Jews as \u201c<\/span>overly or preternaturally powerful<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>a <\/span>trope <\/span>popularized by <\/span>the antisemitic forgery the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. <\/span>The problem is with the other half of the course, the one that purports to \u201ccomplicate\u201d the \u201c<\/span>sympathetic account<\/span>\u201d <\/span>of Jews <\/span>\u201c<\/span>as perennial victims<\/span>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s sadly become a generally accepted fact that a<\/span>ntisemitism in the US <\/span>has been making troubling inroads <\/span>on both the left and the right of the political spectrum. On the right, antisemites <\/span>are, at least, <\/span>open<\/span> and honest, unabashed or even, at times, proud. T<\/span>h<\/span>is <\/span>type of antisemitism is easy to <\/span>spot and to <\/span>diagnose.<\/span><\/p>\n

The a<\/span>ntisemitism <\/span>of the left is <\/span>more clever<\/span>. It hides in plain sight, disguising itself frequently as pro-Palestinian or human rights activism. Other times, left-wing antisemitism poses virtuously as opposition to the antisemites of the right. <\/span>For example, the film \u201cIsraelism\u201d complains, <\/span>\u201cAmerican Jewish organizations have spent the last decade pouring millions of dollars into smearing and marginalizing human rights advocates\u2026 trying to brand Palestinian protest as antisemitic when there were neo-Nazis trying to kill us in our synagogues!\u201d<\/span> according to a <\/span>review<\/span><\/a> from StandWithUs. (Notably, the film was <\/span>screened at O<\/span>b<\/span>erlin<\/span><\/a> in November of 2023<\/span>, just a month and a half after the October 7 attack in which 1200 Israelis were killed by <\/span>Hamas<\/span>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>attempt to promote one brand of antisemitism<\/span>,<\/span> even while <\/span>using a critique of <\/span>a different <\/span>form<\/span> of antisemitism <\/span>as a shield, <\/span>is what we see in <\/span>Professor <\/span>Matthew Berkman<\/span>\u2019s <\/span>course. <\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he assertion that Jews, or those who \u201csympathize\u201d with Jews, claim perennial victimhood <\/span>in order to further malevolent ends <\/span>forms<\/span> the basis of a great deal of antisemitism<\/span>; the \u201cvictimhood\u201d canard is <\/span>a straw man set up to demonize Jews<\/span>. <\/span>(For one example, see <\/span>h<\/span>e<\/span>re<\/span><\/a>.) <\/span>Yet that is <\/span>the very same assertion that is being made in the course description itself. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Oberlin administration claims the course is designed to oppose antisemitism. That is partially correct, but it also <\/span>serves to <\/span>operate as a <\/span>smokescreen<\/span>. To understand this requires an acknowledgement that antisemitism can take different forms, and that antisemites of different stripes can at times come together (as when <\/span>David Duke<\/span><\/a> called Ilhan Omar \u201c<\/span>the most<\/span> important <\/span>M<\/span>ember of <\/span>the US <\/span>Congress<\/span>\u201d) and can at other times operate in opposition to each other, depending on what best suits their needs. <\/span>The pretense of opposing antisemitism, but only opposing antisemitism from the right, can serve to bolster the credentials of those who themselves promulgate a different flavor of antisemitism. <\/span><\/p>\n

In light of<\/span> the course description\u2019s obvious opposition to right-wing antisemitism, some may be tempted to give the course the benefit of the doubt. But a quick look at the history of the instructor, <\/span>someone who<\/span>, according to Canary Mission,<\/span> has himself been a <\/span>long-time <\/span>member of a left-wing<\/span> antisemitic group<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>should quickly put any such doubt to rest. <\/span>Even as the course, according to its description, knocks down one antisemitic trope \u2013 that of Jews possessing supernatural powers \u2013 it promotes a different one: that Jews fallaciously claim victimhood for political gain. <\/span><\/p>\n

Since the time when Oberlin made news <\/span>because of<\/span> a <\/span>p<\/span>rofessor who<\/span><\/a>, among other things, blamed Israel for the September 11 attack on the US, t<\/span>he <\/span>new <\/span>Oberlin administration<\/span>, led by President <\/span>Carmen <\/span>Twillie<\/span> Ambar<\/span>,<\/span> seemed to have made strides in combatting antisemitism. With a <\/span>few<\/span> of worst actors having departed the campus<\/span> under various ci<\/span>r<\/span>cumstances<\/span>, President <\/span>Ambar <\/span>issued a <\/span>decent statement<\/span><\/a> regarding the October 7 attack on Israel and recently blocked a terror-supporting speaker that a student group had attempted to bring to the campus. In the Spring of 2024 when antisemitic campus protests rocked the country, <\/span>the protests at <\/span>Oberlin <\/span>were<\/span>, in comparison, mild, and Oberlin <\/span>stayed out of the news. <\/span>But <\/span>now, <\/span>the Oberlin administration\u2019s vision <\/span>seems once again <\/span>to be occluded when it comes to left-wing antisemitism<\/span>, and Professor Berkman\u2019s course threatens to bring the school back to the <\/span>Karega<\/span> era.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
