It\u2019s no secret that widespread anti-Israel bigotry has infected college campuses around the world. And it seems that this toxicity will once again rear its head in Ann Arbor, Mich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Jan. 25-26, the\u00a0Palestinian Youth Movement<\/a>\u00a0(PYM) is slated to co-host the \u201c2020 Youth for Palestine Conference<\/a>\u201d\u00a0on the University of Michigan\u2019s campus. Billed as an opportunity to \u201cform regional partnerships with other Palestinian solidarity movements\u201d and to \u201cexpand your knowledge of the Palestinian movement,\u201d naive students will undoubtedly tolerate, if not support,\u00a0what seems to be an entirely moral liberation movement. This could not be further from the truth\u2014something much more sinister lurks within the PYM\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to its website<\/a>, the PYM is a \u201ctransnational, independent, grassroots movement of young Palestinians in Palestine and in exile worldwide as a result of the ongoing Zionist colonization and occupation of our homeland.\u201d They rather incoherently \u201caffirm that [their] struggle is deeply rooted in the Arab regional context that must be freed of neocolonialism in order for the complete liberation of Palestine to become a tangible reality.\u201d In other words, the \u201cArab regional context\u201d must be rid of the Jewish state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Predictably, not a single page on the PYM\u2019s website mentions the thousands of years of\u00a0Jewish religious, spiritual and historical connection with the Land of Israel. After all, doing so would expose the organization\u2019s \u201canti-colonial struggle\u201d for the brazen assault on Jewish identity and peoplehood that it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ironically, what is <\/em>colonialist in nature is a movement that advocates for the expansion of the Middle East\u2019s majority Muslim culture at the expense of the Jewish minority\u2019s national identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering that the PYM\u2019s driving ideology relies on an erasure of the most integral foundations of Judaism, it is hardly surprising that they espouse sympathy\u00a0for antisemitic terrorists. To find proof of this, look no further than their Facebook page: On Nov. 13, members\u00a0published a list<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cmartyrs\u201d killed by Israeli airstrikes, which included Bahaa Salim Hasan Abu al-Atta at the top of the list. What the PYM deceitfully hides from its followers is that al-Atta was a member of the Iranian-sponsored Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ)\u2014a U.S.-designated\u00a0terrorist organization whose members have\u00a0pledged<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cslaughter the Zionists with [their] own hands,\u201d perpetrated multiple suicide bombings within Israel and frequently use the Gaza strip as a military base for rocket attacks aimed at Israeli civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That the PYM would mention these murderers in the same\u00a0breath as innocent civilians accidentally killed by Israeli airstrikes indicates a deep-seated pathology, and a willingness to tacitly support genocidal violence under the guise of Palestinian \u201cliberation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only does the PYM mourn terrorist leaders while ignoring their victims, it advocates for the freedom of those imprisoned for supporting U.S.-designated terrorist organizations. In yet another duplicitous Facebook post<\/a>, the PYM pompously demanded \u201cfreedom for the Holy Land 5\u201d\u2014a reference to five men imprisoned for using their charity, the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) for Relief and Development\u2014to funnel money to Hamas. Insisting that the men were \u201cconvicted of false charges\u201d and merely participated in \u201ccommunity organizing activities tied to the Palestinian cause,\u201d the PYM vowed to \u201ccontinue the fight for justice on their behalf.\u201d Apparently, sending money to those who orchestrate suicide bombings constitutes support for the \u201cPalestinian cause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PYM\u2019s claims are false. Official FBI documents, including a memorandum<\/a> written by the Bureau\u2019s then Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division Dale Watson, demonstrated that the HLF transferred funds directly from its offices in Richardson, Texas, to Hamas-controlled \u201ccharities\u201d in the West Bank and Gaza. According to FBI analysis in Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development v. Ashcroft, et al.<\/em>, during October of 1993, five HLF officials met in Philadelphia to discuss how to bolster American organizations\u2019 support for Hamas, praising \u201cthe movement\u201d and urging a \u201cfocus on those people who are directly connected with Jihad.\u201d Thankfully, their references to samah <\/em>during the meeting (Hamas spelled backwards) did not fool investigators. Four of the five meeting attendees (Shukri Abu Baker, Ghassan Elashi, Mohammed el-Mezain and Mufid Abdulqader) were among the \u201cHoly Land 5\u201d glowingly embraced by the PYM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university\u2019s student body should not be fooled. The impending conference is not about \u201cjustice\u201d or \u201cliberation.\u201d It is about the destruction of Israel\u00a0and the demonization of those who support its right to defend itself. Such malicious activities hurt the Palestinian people most of all; every rocket launched from Gaza\u2019s densely populated cities, every terrorist\u00a0financially rewarded<\/a>\u00a0by the Palestinian Authority, and every\u00a0antisemitic program<\/a>\u00a0run by Palestinian government media will only lead (understandably and justifiably) to a more resolute Israeli defensive posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any activist who\u00a0ignores these realities<\/a>\u00a0is perpetuating the plight of innocent Palestinian civilians. The University of Michigan community deserves better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
