In\u00a0the past he has also spoken for CAMERA-supported Israel groups at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/he\/blog\/shooting-under-fire-gil-cohen-magen-at-cal-state-long-beach\/#.V6Be6pOg-YU\">Cal State University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/he\/blog\/binghamton-university-zionist-organization-buzo-hosts-gil-cohen-magen\/#.V6BfXJOg-YU\">Binghamton University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/he\/blog\/shooting-under-fire-great-danes-for-israel-host-gil-cohen-magen\/#.V6Bfe5Og-YU\">University of Albany<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/he\/campuses\/StanfordUniversity.html\/#.V6BkoJOg-YU\">Stanford University<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/he\/campus-programs\/campus.html\/#.V6Bkb5Og-YU\">King&#8217;s College in London<\/a>, where students have learnt about other photography capturing other facets of Israeli society, including Operation Protective Edge.<\/p>\n<p>Ultra-Orthodox or \u2018Haredi\u2019 Jews now make up <a href=\"http:\/\/jppi.org.il\/uploads\/Israel_Today-Society_Identity_and_Political_Affinities-English.pdf\">over 10% of Israeli society<\/a> yet remain quite a mystery to most of the country. As discussed in the news, Haredi Jews have faced many cultural clashes. While the majority fundamentally objects to drafting into the Israel Defense Forces, many Israelis are now pushing for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/idf-said-to-revoke-4000-exemptions-for-haredi-men\/\">Haredi Jews to serve in\u00a0the military<\/a>.\u00a0Similarly, regarding education, many ultra-Orthodox Jews are fighting to remain secluded from the secular world but the Israeli government is pushing them <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/opinion\/1.734549\">to teach basic social studies in their schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In an increasingly technological world, many ultra-Orthodox Jews find themselves more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/articles\/0,7340,L-4780318,00.html\">exposed to the secular world<\/a> than in the past. Consequently, many Haredi Jews have become interested in the secular world and its intellectual and cultural freedoms. Many young Haredi Jews are leaving their communities, which can be liberating but also extremely challenging; ultra-Orthodox Jews have been in the headlines recently for many\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/15\/opinion\/after-hasidic-suicide-israel-looks-in-the-mirror.html\">tragic suicides<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6353\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6353\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6353\" src=\"https:\/\/cameraoncampus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/3717022.jpg\" alt=\"From Cohen-Magen's Ultra-Orthodox series\" width=\"624\" height=\"418\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From Gil Cohen-Magen&#8217;s Ultra-Orthodox series<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As the ultra-Orthodox and secular worlds increasingly collide on social and political levels, Israel should not overlook the importance of understanding the mysterious Haredi world. He presented the Haredi ritual of making \u2018shmura,\u2019 or \u2018protected,\u2019 matzah.
